All of the songs on this album are from the golden age of the Great American Songbook, the thirties through to the early sixties of the last century. Everyone in the country knew these songs by heart; they were lovely, graceful, and in retrospect, compact little poems of a time when music had simpler but very sincere expressions of emotion and love. There wasn’t a lot of irony going on; no one had the time or the money. These songs also have a kind of aural tone that I find mesmerising, with lush arrangements that enhance the flavour of romantic longing that was the hallmark of so much popular music of the time.
